The Brentwood Christian Bears baseball team finished off the 2026 season strong with two big wins versus district opponent Bishop Dunne on April 28, the same night the ballclub hosted senior night.
Although the Bears fell just short of gaining a playoff spot, their 13-13 record and improvement over the course of the season led to a positive experience for all involved.
“The boys on this team are extremely hard workers,” said head coach Charles Bollinger. “That’s something I would never change about them."
Senior Jack Henry Gonzalez led the team in batting average and on base percentage, while senior Tanner Hunka produced a stellar 24 stolen bases on the year. Juniors, Dalton Griswold and Perry (Trey) Wood, contributed immensely to the team as well. Griswold led the team in RBIs with 21 and Wood pitched a majority of games with an ERA of 3.32.
“This team is full of people who show up ready to work,” said junior Drake Jackson. “We show up to practice ready to work and that’s what allows us to have good stats and win games.”
Some key games for the team were the games against Grace Community from Tyler. Despite the long bus ride, the boys competed their tails off. Despite losing the first game in the doubleheader, the Bears came back with new determination in round two, taking a 12-2 run-rule victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.
“For us, it was never about the score,” said Wood. “It was about going out there and putting our best product on the field because we love the great game of baseball and when the game is over, we were always a closer team than ever before.”
BCS went on the next week to beat Regents School of Austin in the home game of their matchup, but was unable to take the second on the road, leading two a pair of winner-take-all games versus rival Hyde Park for a chance at playoffs.
In an unexpected turn of events, as rain prevented them from playing their home game against Hyde Park, the Bears were forced to play a doubleheader with both games happening at the home of the Panthers. Despite a strong defensive effort, holding Hyde Park to six runs in both games, BCS lost, 6-0 and 6-2, ending its playoff hopes.
BCS will be saying bye to numerous seniors. Gonzalez and Hunka were both key contributors on the mound and in the infield for all of their high school seasons. Parker Saxon caught in every single game this year. Liam McGaughy and Lukas Fenske both joined midway through the season. Senior Thomas Calder, who lost the remainder of his final high school athletics experience after a knee injury in football, served as a manager for the team.
“They are one of the greatest groups I know,” said junior Levi Baron when asked about the seniors. “They are like no other.”
The baseball team this year has made an impact at Brentwood Christian School, winning with class and losing with a good attitude.
