The Brentwood Christian softball team beat Concordia 20-10 on Feb. 24 at their home field. After a tough season in 2025 and a 21-2 loss to Hill Country on Feb. 19 to begin this season, the win is huge for the program.
“We struggled last year, and many people would have looked at those struggles and decided to quit – that’s what our culture in the world encourages,” first-year coach Ethan Grant said. “This is mainly the same group as last year, and they’ve been committed to help lay a foundation to change things.”
After the first inning, the game was tied at five, but the Lady Bears pulled away in the second inning and never looked back. Senior Reese Hertel was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, and two walks.
Another senior, Zuriel Davis, had two bunts for RBIs, while sophomore Margaret Banks pitched all four innings, recording seven strikeouts and picking up the win - her first as a Lady Bear.
“[The win is] something that the program hasn't experienced since we won district two years ago, and it made me feel so much hope for the season that's coming,” said junior catcher, pitcher and first baseman Ella Kennedy.
Grant started practices on Feb. 4, with the main focus being on fundamentals. Having several years of experience coaching softball and baseball, Grant said he plans to work on situational understanding of the game.
The team is up to 14 players after adding seniors Jolie Shepard, Harper Counts and Hailyn Counts back to the roster after a one-year hiatus, and also boast six returning starters from last year’s team that went winless.
Grant said that this year’s team is a good representation of the qualities BCS strives to instill in its students and that they have been committed to help lay a strong foundation.
“They are hard workers, striving for excellence, and when adversity hits, they have responded with heads high and an open mind for improvement,” Grant said. “I’m very proud of their start to the season thus far.”
After a few years away, the girls again play home games at Balcones, sporting new green, white, and black uniforms.
They will play at least ten more games before they open up district play on March 27 against Brook Hill.
