Brentwood Christian School golfers are working toward maximizing their potential this season, especially those who have been playing for multiple years at BCS. With a large number of returners, but also brand-new golfers, this season promises to be an interesting mix of development and success.
The team will try to keep it simple, make putts and learn the rules of the game like the back of their hand.
“Staying consistent with what we do and especially focusing on our short game [is a huge priority],” said first-year head coach Connor White.
White is the fourth head golf coach in four years for Brentwood. A former assistant, he takes over the program from former coach Rick Owens. He inherits a team with a number of athletes who have played the sport outside of school, including junior Peyton Tucker and sophomore Henry Gibson, who has been anticipating playing.
“I fixed my slice and my tee shots got better over the summer,” said Gibson. ”I want to work when there's pressure on me in the tournaments and work on my mentality.”
Other key golfers include senior Luke Weed, and juniors AJ Koncaba, Josh Howe and Renee Groomes.
A new student to BCS, junior Aiden Ott, is another seasoned golfer.
”I’m looking good, besides some minor issues with my swing, but overall I'm looking good and excited to play,” said Ott. “I'm excited to hit at the range a lot and play at tournaments to help the team win.”
The team has played a handful of tournaments thus far. Highlights include freshman Sophie Hong earning fourth place as an individual at the St. Michael’s Invitational on March 3 at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
After spring break, the golf team will play in the Regents tournament and Hyde Park tournament before traveling to Bullard for the district championship on April 27.
