The Brentwood Christian School boys and girls basketball teams wrapped up their season several weeks ago, but the awards portion of the season bore much fruit for strong individual performances throughout the year.
On the boys side, BCS senior Zach Czerlinsky was named Defensive Player of the Year in TAPPS 2-5A, capping off a career in which he won over 100 career games with the team and was part of back-to-back state semifinalists squads. Czerlinsky, who overcame a significant football injury to return in January, ended up averaging 16 points, five rebounds and three assists as the team finished tied for second in regular season play before earning the four-seed for the TAPPS playoffs.
Czerlinsky and junior Aiden Ott were first-team selections for BCS. Ott led the program in 3-pointers made & averaged 13 points in his first year on campus.
Elsewhere, senior Caleb Catron and junior Evan Berger were second-team selections, while junior Jovan Singh, senior Luke Weed and freshman Chigozie Okorafor were honorable mention.
On the girls side, Brentwood also had a superlative in junior Anu Oguntade, who was named Most Improved Player in TAPPS 2-5A. Oguntade averaged nearly a double-double of 9 points and 10 rebounds during district play, leading the squad in both categories, as well as blocks. She was also a first-team selection.
Freshman Reese Smith emerged for the team in the second half of the season and finished with 8.5 points per game, earning second-team status. She was also named to the all-freshman team. Junior Ella Crouch, who suffered a season-ending injury vs. Hyde Park on Jan. 28, was also second team after averaging seven points per game and tying for first on the team in 3-pointers made during district action.
Senior Rachel Walker, junior Ella Kennedy and sophomore Ari Rainelli were all honorable mention selections, while sophomore Katherine Morgan was named to the all-sportsmanship team.
