The Brentwood Christian School swim team has big goals for this season. Both the girls and boys have the ability and the motivation to go far, and their hopes are to place in the top five in the TAPPS state meet.
Last year, the program graduated a talented class in regards to swimmers. The boys team earned third place in state. This year, the younger athletes have stepped up to the plate. Coach Jason Montier still has immense confidence in the team’s abilities.
Their first meet was Battle for the Crown in San Antonio, where sophomore Ali Nelson-Cook placed second place in the 500 yard freestyle and 11th in the 50 free. Sophomore Chayce Lee got third in the 100 free as well as ninth in the 50 free.
Though the team was missing key swimmers from sickness and injuries Nov. 21 at the TISCA meet, Nelson-Cook made it to finals in the 200 free despite having a sprained ankle. Lee had a very good meet as well, making it to finals in the 200 individual medley (IM) and 100 breaststroke, setting school records in both events.
The team also competed at the Non-TISCA meet Dec. 13 at Cedar Ridge in Round Rock.
With the three meets the swim team has had so far, they have shown their potential, and that they are ready to go out and compete at the rest of the meets, including the state meet on Feb. 10 in San Antonio.
The gains might be small on paper, but Montier sees big gains long-term.
“The swim team has great team chemistry and is very encouraging to each other,” said Montier. “They might work all year for hundredths of a second.”
With the most pivotal meets of the season on the horizon, BCS swimmers will continue to put in early mornings and weekend competition to chase their goals.
The fruits of their labor are fun personally and for their coach.
“When they break through to a new best time, the look on their face is worth all the early mornings,” Montier said.
Upcoming meets for swim include Veritas in Buda on Jan. 26, with the TAPPS regional meet on Jan. 26 and state on Feb. 10.
