The Brentwood Christian School cross country program closed out its season Monday at the Cottonwood Creek golf course in Waco, the annual site for the TAPPS state competition.
The Bears, competing in TAPPS 5A, once again put together a strong finish, with the girls team coming in fifth and the boys 10th in a very competitive field.
The girls were led by senior Harper Counts, last year's 5A state champion, who finished her career with a fourth-place showing. Senior Hailyn Counts and junior Lynden Worley were 36th and 37th, respectively, while freshmen Darla Harlan (48th) and Lowary Smith (56th) provided important times to get the group to fifth place overall. Freshman Reese Smith (73rd) and sophomore Scarlet Harlan (75th) also ran for the Lady Bears.
Harper Counts, for finishing in the top 15 runners, was awarded all state status.
On the boys side, senior Nico Napper closed out his career with a 17th place finish in a time of 18:20.36. Juniors Xavier Parra (62nd) and Evan Berger (65th) were the next two finishers for the Bears, with sophomore Henry Belcik (97th) and junior Huxley Harlan (101st) rounding out the scoring.
Freshman Nathan Johanson helped break a tie for 10th by finishing ahead of the sixth place runner from Frassati Catholic School to secure sole possession of 10th place for BCS.
