The Brentwood Christian School football team battled to the finish in this year's season and home opener, falling just shy of a fourth-quarter comeback in a 42-35 loss to Central Texas Christian School Friday night.
Despite trailing 42-21 in the fourth, BCS refused to back down. A rushing touchdown by senior quarterback Brayden Jennings made it 42-28, and senior kicker Liam McGaughy was able to execute a textbook onside kick to give the Bears the ball back immediately inside CTCS territory with just over three minutes to play.
Jennings found a seam and scored again just under a minute later to make it 42-35, and McGaughy played hero on the ensuing kick off once more, as BCS recovered and had a chance to tie or take the lead with possession of the ball and just under two minutes in the game.
The Lions' defense stiffened in their final possession; however, thwarting an early screen pass to senior Esteban Gutierrez and getting a key second-down sack to end the Bears' comeback hopes.
Jennings had three scores for BCS, while Gutierrez added one on the ground. Senior Gabe Washington caught a second-quarter touchdown pass for the first points of the season for Brentwood, and senior Zach Czerlinsky had an interception on the opening play of the game.
The Bears will get a brief rest over the Labor Day holiday weekend and return to action on Sept. 5, when they will take on TAPPS 6A St. Dominic Savio at 7 p.m. at Westwood High School's Warrior Bowl.
