Brentwood Christian School is becoming a regular entry in the AAU Junior Olympics track and field championships. While BCS students are technically competing for the Bears, they are building up skills and times for next spring and representing the school in a positive way.
This year's event was in Houston beginning July 26 and ran through Aug. 2. Many BCS students compete for the Austin Striders Track Club (ASTC).
High school track and field athletes were on full display, with rising senior Caitlin Welsh, a TAPPS state qualifier last year in relay and field events, competed in the heptathlon, long jump and triple jump. Her best finish came in the heptathlon, where she was 27th in the nation with 3316 points.
Elsewhere, teammate and junior Ava Johnson set a PR in the 200 meter dash, clocking a 25.68. She also competed in the 100 meter dash, which she qualified for last year at TAPPS state. Johnson's 4x100 team finished 6th overall.
Other HS students at the meet included rising seniors Joshua Gonzales and Matthew Crouch. The duo, both important pieces of the BCS boys team, performed well. Gonzales, who finished in the top five in the state last year in the discus, qualified in the decathlon and javelin. He finished sixth overall in the former. Crouch, who qualified in the javelin, threw 86'.
High schoolers didn't steal the entire show; however, with a trio of current BCS middle schoolers also competing at the event. Scarlett Smeltzer turned in a PR in the discus of 63', good for 14th place overall. She also qualified in shot put and the turbo javelin.
Noah Welsh earned 29th in the boys discus with a throw of 76', and also qualified in shot put. Zephaniah Botello qualified as part of a 4x400 relay, and her squad was 31st overall.
