The Bears and Lady Bears golf teams had a learning season, with a team of mostly newcomers. The teams did their best competing at a higher level, but were unable to qualify past the district tournament as a team.
With the move up to TAPPS 5A, the competition became trickier, although the newfound competition caused a lot of players to gain valuable experience on the
course quickly.
The golf teams had one player advance to regionals, senior Karlee Lawrence, after the district meet, hosted at Shadow Glen golf course. Lawrence placed 10th at district, qualifying her for regionals on April 28.
At regionals, Lawrence was unable to qualify for state for a second straight sea- son, but left a strong legacy of success for the girls golf program at BCS, including returning golfers and sophomores Peyton Tucker and Renee Groomes.
On the boys side, senior Jack Fluitt was the top golfer for the Bears, but he was unable to escape the district meet.
The team had an extremely busy season overall, with numerous local tournaments scheduled by head coach Rick Owens to help prepare the team for district and regional competition.
The teams also attended the annual Hyde Park invitational on March 26, where Lawrence placed in the top 10, and the boys team placed in the top 15.
“I’m really proud of the team; moving to 5A was a big change but they really pushed through and did their best,” Owens said. “The Brentwood golf team had a good season full of moments to be proud of.”
The girls team will be losing Lawrence to graduation and will be actively looking to find enough golfers to be able to qualify for the team leaderboard next year.
Fluitt and senior Ralph Castillo were the lone seniors for the boys, who will return Liam McGaughy, Luke Sheth and Henrik Dawson, among others.
