The Brentwood Christian School track and field team braved multiple rain delays on Thursday, April 24 at the TAPPS 5A North Regional meet, but still managed to compete well and qualify multiple athletes for this year's state meet.
The girls took eight athletes and qualified all eight, with the team's 4x200 relay combination of senior Charis McGaughy, junior Caitlin Welsh and sophomores Lynden Worley and Skyla Jimenez earning a top-four spot and punching a ticket to state.
Individually, defending state champion and junior Harper Counts will vie for another state title in both the 3200 and the 1600 after finishing second in both races. Junior and sister Hailyn Counts will join her in the 3200, narrowly missing in the mile after a fifth-place (but personal record time) finish.
Elsewhere, sophomore Anu Oguntade will return to state in the 300 hurdles, finishing fourth in her race, while Welsh (long jump) and Worley (high jump) will also compete at state. Sophomore Ava Johnson, a champion in two relays at state last year, also qualified for state in the open 100.
BCS was unable to qualify its 4x100 or 4x400 relays this year, a rarity for the program.
On the boys side, a tough field of competitors left the Bears with only two standing heading into state. Junior Joshua Gonzales was able to escape with a top-four finish in the discus, for which he has the current school record, while senior Griffin Smith made it out in the 110 hurdles.
Brentwood qualified its three relays, but none were able to finish in the top four. Smith also competed in the 300 hurdles, earning fifth, while senior Hollis Harlan was just short in the 400 (seventh) and 800 (fifth).

The TAPPS 5A state championships will begin next Friday, May 2, at Waco Midway High School, and run through Saturday, May 3.
