Golf Thrives Under White's Leadership

The Brentwood Christian School golf team had one of its better seasons in recent memory. A full roster of male golfers competed well across several tournaments, while the girls team, led by a seventh-place finish at district by freshman Sophie Hong, qualified for regionals for the first time in recent memory.

The season was a success, according to first-year head coach Connor White.

“The boys team took a step forward in combining the existing talent and veteran leadership with an infusion that was new to the program this year,” he said. “The girls were a young group that worked hard to lower their scores and improve their swings one day at a time."

The boys team was led by seniors Grey Nyby and Luke Weed, juniors Joshua Howe, AJ Koncaba and Aiden Ott, and sophomore Henry Gibson.

Ott, who was one of the team’s MVPs, joined after basketball season and was pleased with his progression as a player.

“I have improved so much from last year by being more consistent with my hits and especially focusing on my putting which has cut down my scores a lot,” Ott said.

Nyby, the only player this year to compete in the program for four straight seasons, enjoyed his time as a Bears golfer. A return to the course for a casual round feels inevitable for him down the line, particularly after an improved putting game this season.

“Hitting that golf drive in a game makes you feel [Scottie] Scheffler,” Nyby said.

Nyby’s best part of his game was his putting, which helped with his low scores in his rounds. He said his favorite memory was when his putt-off green went in from 8 feet away.

The girls were able to survive the loss of alumna Karlee Lawrence to graduation and had enough scorecards to place in the team standings at the district meet. Hong was the team’s ace all season, and as a freshman, has a bright future ahead.

Veteran and junior Renee Groomes took on an expanded leadership role for the girls, mentoring a freshman group which included Joy Morrison, Hailyn Gomex, and Doris Wu.

“The girls golf team advancing to regionals is a huge deal and a start to what we hope will be a foundation of success for years to come," said White.

White, the fourth golf coach in as many seasons at BCS, is excited for the stability of leading the program into next season, and the athletes he’ll be leading.

“Career low scores are always worth celebrating, and our kids had several of those,” White said. “I am most proud of the character of our kids and how they represented BCS with integrity and the work they put in this year to improve.”
